film/STILL: An Evening with Stacey Steers

90 Minute Running Time
Program: Women + Film

Stacey Steers is an American artist of the first rank. Her animated films are composed of thousands of individual, handmade works on paper, whether collages or individually painted drawings. Her process is both labor-intensive and intuitive. She spends several years creating artwork for each film—typically eight distinct, unique images for every second of animation. Over time, these images become a formal record of an ongoing and obsessive engagement with an original idea, through all its transformations.

Steers’s animations emerge from creation myths (Watunna), dreams (Totem), memories (Phantom Canyon), and allegory (Night Hunter). As the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum wrote: “Fantastical, whimsical and fairy tale-like, these works address issues of gender, identity, warfare and violence, drawing us in with their prettiness, and challenging us with their toughness.”

Her films have screened at festivals and museums worldwide, including Sundance, Telluride, Denver, New Directors/New Films in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the ClampArt in New York, and the Galerie Anita Beckers in Frankfurt, Germany.

Recently she has begun expanding her work to include installations that reflect on and bring focus to the films by placing production elements and/or film loops in a new context. Her work has been installed at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Denver Art Museum, and the Hamburger Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Germany, among others. Steers is a recipient of major grants from Creative Capital and the American Film Institute. She has been an artist fellow at Harvard University, the MacDowell Colony, the Sacatar Foundation, Ucross Foundation, the Liguria Study Center, and Yaddo. She lives and works in Boulder.
Following the screening of a package of her films, anchored by her seminal new work Night Hunter, Steers will be presented with the 2012 Stan Brakhage Vision Award.
