35mm presentation - Beth Raymer (Rebecca Hall) is an intense, excited, beautiful girl with a huge heart who gives up stripping in Florida to realize her dream: to become a cocktail waitress in Las Vegas. When she doesn’t land a job, she lucks into meeting Dink (Bruce Willis), an idiosyncratic sports gambler who sees potential and ability under Beth’s bubbly exterior. Dink offers Beth a job placing wagers and working the phones, and his bet on Beth pays off -- she shows herself to be something of a gambling prodigy, and fast becomes Dink’s good-luck charm. But something else seems to be happening between them, and it’s not so professional...Enter Tulip (Catherine Zeta-Jones), Dink’s understandably territorial ex-showgirl wife. Faced with no other choice but to fire Beth, Dink’s luck runs out when she heads to New York to work for a rival, a bookie named Rosie (Vince Vaughn). When she follows Rosie into an operation that lands her squarely on the wrong side of the law, Dink and Tulip have to rally to help Beth save herself and finally grow up. With LAY THE FAVORITE, acclaimed director Stephen Frears nimbly displays his skill at creating a wicked weave of comedy and drama, creating a thrilling tale of gambling, romance, and improbable friendship found in the unlikeliest of places. From a script by D.V. DeVincentis (High Fidelity, Grosse Pointe Blank), based upon the memoir of Beth Raymer. The film also stars Joshua Jackson and Laura Prepon.
