One of the dangers of adapting literary or theatrical material to film is that the filmmakers can be too protective of the original and don’t expand their material into cinema. That is decidedly not a problem in this remarkable transition of Shakespeare’s Macbeth into Kurosawa’s vision of medieval Japan. While the film respects its source material, this project marries Shakespeare and Elizabethan drama to Japanese Noh theater. The energy of the film and Toshiro Mifune’s sometimes frenetic performance come right out of Kurosawa’s unique genius.
DIRECTOR: Akira Kurosawa
