Digital presentation - Divided into five chapters, the film tells the story of Asako, whose daughter Emili was brutally murdered while in elementary school. Emili’s four best friends all saw the face of the killer, but each insisted that they could not remember it, as if the shock of the tragedy had swept away their memories. Fifteen years later, the crime remains unsolved, and the vengeful Asako is determined to make the girls pay for their reticence.
As Asako methodically tracks down each of the women, Kurosawa minutely observes how their feelings of guilt have warped their lives, binding their existence to the moment that none of them can forget. But, in the final chapter, which reveals what actually happened on that fateful day, the tables suddenly, horribly turn — and Asako is faced with a penance greater than any she could have imagined. A disquieting fresco of disturbed minds and wounded souls, Penance is a quiet masterpiece of mounting intensity.

DIRECTOR: Kiyoshi Kurosawa
