Without telling him, Madame de... (Danielle Darrieux) sells a pair of earrings given to her by her husband in order to pay some debts. That act sets off a circular wave of suspicions as well as financial and marital difficulties. Director Max Ophuls is little known in the U.S. now, but he’s one of the greatest filmmakers, and this delicate, suggestive masterpiece was his personal favorite.
