An obsessed scholar attempts to withdraw from the world but finds personal ties drawing him back into the family he had left behind in this novelistic, beautifully modulated drama from acclaimed Québécois filmmaker Bernard Émond.
The film focuses on Pierre Leduc, a well-liked lecturer and Ph.D. candidate at a Quebec City university who can no longer stomach the office politics and daily distractions of academic life. Instead of teaching, he wants to devote his time to translating the works of the late Polish poet Edward Stachura, a kind of Sylvia Plath/Leonard Cohen/Rimbaud figure for Polish youth whose fame has never extended past his nation’s borders. Pierre is someone for whom the current epoch, and even society in general, is an endless litany of complications. He readily admits that his life has been defined by an overpowering need to escape the world — but as he soon finds out, this is much tougher than he thinks. His ailing father suddenly wants him back in his life, and a chance encounter at a café with a mother and her child suddenly brings him into contact with the daughter whom he has never met.
