Short Term 12
USA, 2013, 96 Minute Running Time
NOW PLAYING at the Sie FilmCenter.
This day in the life of a foster-care group home for troubled teens is an unsparing, remarkably direct film, following the daily routines of Grace (Brie Larson), a counselor in her 20's who was also brought up in the foster-care system. Each day, she oversees petty squabbles and almost daily fights among the youths and calms them as best she can with anything that works, including music. When new ward, Jayden (Kaitlyn Dever), arrives at the center, she somehow triggers long-buried emotions in Grace. Old demons from Grace’s troubled past that have laid dormant for years come bubbling to the surface, affecting her ability to act as an impartial counselor for the other at-risk youths. Grace is finally forced to confront her own scars and begin the healing process for herself before she can attend to the needs of others. Short Term 12 is an expanded version of director Destin Daniel Cretton’s 2008 short film of the same name. The feature format gives Cretton more room to add depth and backstories for the characters, giving the story an added element of authenticity. This uplifting story of redemption and healing, Cretton’s second feature following his 2011 debut, I Am Not a Hipster, is told with great candor and some surprising humor.
