Technological tendencies have dramatically affected the ways in which couples meet, break up and “bounce back.” Bryan Poyser (director of Lovers of Hate, which screened at Sundance) interweaves texting and Facebook flawlessly into one turbulent Austin weekend. With the sort of witty repartee and shenanigans one might expect from a Kevin Smith film, Poyser’s work moves into the digital era, with text messaging and a Facebook post galvanizing the plot. We don’t realize truly how much these phenomena shape interpersonal relationships.

Cathy and Stan amicably parted ways from a successful romance due to career opportunities on opposing coasts. After six months of longing, it seems they have agreed to not stay in touch or try the “long distance” thing. Moving on seemed the best option. Out in L.A., not as successful as he had hoped, Stan plops in front of his laptop and his heart soars as he sees that Cathy will be back in their hometown visiting Kara, a member of their tight-knit circle of friends. He decides it’s worth an $800 airfare it to “run into” her. The breakup of Cathy and Stan led to the breakup of their respective best friends, causing all four to claim allegiances, yet all try to secretly fulfill their agendas through private texts to one another. Miscommunication and misunderstandings, of course, result. One very honest scene stands out, illustrating the excitement and anticipation of hearing the “new text” notification on your phone from someone attractive you just met.

Austin plays a fifth character in this tale as old stomping grounds ignite old feelings for the ex-couples, forcing them to re-evaluate their decisions, while new adventures such as the Air Sex World Championships reinforce dormant passions.
