Director and producer Cecelia Peck chose Linor Abargil, Miss World 1998 and rape survivor, as the subject of the heartbreaking documentary Brave Miss World. We meet Linor 11 years after her brutal assault by Uri Shlomo. She was only 18 at the time and fought bravely for justice rather than keeping quiet. Aside from fighting to keep Shlomo in prison while he seeks parole, Linor speaks to rape survivors around the world. The women she meets all face the same questions: How do you cope after being raped? Who can you speak to? How do you tell your family? Should you go to the police? How do you seek justice? How do you move on? No matter where they are the in the world the women struggle with the same problems: guilt, shame, fear, anger, depression, and social stigma.

With powerful personal testimonies from rape survivors, the documentary focuses on their raw emotions and struggles. There are no reenactments of the sort you might see on a prime-time cop drama; the message is about global attitudes toward rape and the reality rape survivors face. Linor’s journey reveals a global lack of support for rape survivors. Their voices are often not heard; Linor asks these women to cry out and share their stories. Filmed across the world, in many languages, Brave Miss World shows that rape doesn’t discriminate regarding age, race, sex, country, or religion. Sexual assault is a crime, and society needs to change the conversation to aid rape survivors rather than blaming them.
