Tricked  {Steekspel}

Netherlands, 2012, 85 Minute Running Time
Genre/Subjects: Comedy, Drama
Program: Focus on National Cinema: Netherlands
Language: Dutch English Sub-Titles

Tricked, the latest from Paul Verhoeven, the infamous auteur of Robocop, Basic Instinct and Showgirls, opens with the director as he copes with the difficulties of producing a crowdsourced screenplay that credits an extraordinary 397 participants. After employing a professional screenwriter (Kim Van Kooten) to write the first five minutes, Verhoeven invited audience input for the next five, an invitation that yielded more than 700 scripts and over 3,500 pages. Tricked accordingly charts the filmmakers’ process as they navigate this and even more volunteered material, cast their Dutch-produced film, and ultimately shoot the crowdsourced feature.

The results, clocking in at a little over 50 minutes, follow. A wealthy businessman and serial philanderer Remco (Peter Blok) celebrates his 50th birthday with friends and family. One of his former mistresses, Nadja (Sallie Harmsen), arrives, unexpectedly and uninvited, with a shocker: she is eight months pregnant. Despite her initial denials, Nadja and a couple of Remco’s business associates soon begin to blackmail the patriarch over the unborn child’s paternity. In the meantime, another of Remco’s lovers hatches a plan to save the slimy, extorted lead.

Remco’s knowing spouse (Ricky Koole), lust-filled son (Robert de Hoog), and the latter’s raven-haired object of desire (Gaite Jansen) all provide memorable and melodramatically pivotal presences in Tricked, a delectable little piece of chamber cinema that absolutely overflows with pleasurably pulpy disclosures. In this sense, and in spite of its mass point of origin, the comparatively light Tricked materializes as a deeply Verhoevean work of 21st-century narrative experimentation.
