The Resurrection of a Bastard marks the feature-film debut of Amsterdam-based visual artist Guido van Driel. Adapting his own graphic novel for the screen, van Driel tells the intermittently comic story of an outlandishly brutal Dutch gangster Ronnie (Yorick van Wageningen, The Chronicles of Riddick), who finds himself the target of a masked assassin following an especially nauseating act of violence. The resulting encounter, presented within the extended flashback that dominates the film, finds Ronnie’s soul leaving his body, floating up through the bathroom ceiling panels, and hovering above a discotheque floor.

In this moment of maximal visual adventure and accomplishment, van Driel brings something new to the Dutch cinema: magical realism. This same approach can be seen in the newly reformed (and prophetic) Ronnie’s chance meeting with the film’s emotionally scarred asylum-seeker Eduardo (Goua Robert Grovogui), on an archetypal, silvery Low Country landscape.

The Resurrection of a Bastard accordingly sports a conspicuous “Dutchness,” a quality that is most pronounced in its carefully crafted landscapes and in the small-town Frisian regionalism and historical references that more often than not provide occasion for the film’s satirical sense of humor. Of course, van Driel’s film draws equally on American action sources, whether it is the ultra-violence and a-chronology of Quentin Tarantino or the supernatural subject matter of the name-checked The Sixth Sense.
