The decidedly quirky French indie 2 Autumns, 3 Winters centers on the romantic lives of its three 20- and 30-something protagonists, Arman (Vincent Macaigne), Amélie (Maud Wyler) and Benjamin (Bastien Bouillon). In dozens of short chapters that alternate between moments of crisis and the comically inconsequential, writer-director Sébastien Betbeder traces the arc of Parisians Arman and Amélie’s courtship, a relationship that almost begins with an accidental encounter and one that commences in earnest after Arman comes to the distressed Amélie’s aid. In a parallel plot, Arman’s art-school chum Benjamin begins his own love affair, following an unexpected stroke that lands him in the hospital.

Betbeder’s feature is remarkable foremost for the intimate relationship it forges between the film’s audience and its characters. Utilizing consistent voice-over and a regular mode of direct address where the leads confide and confess to the camera, before computer-generated backgrounds, Betbeder’s actors are forthright in sharing their joys and emotional struggles as the story progresses over its two-year-plus arc.

A work of formal adventure and aesthetic diversity–2 Autumns, 3 Winters also features short snippets of animation—Betbeder’s film is ultimately an object of cinephilia, complete with references to and even clips from Eugène Green’s The Living World, Bresson’s Four Nights of a Dreamer, and George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. The most germane citation, however, is to the work of Swiss auteur Alain Tanner: 2 Autumns, 3 Winters shares not only the alpine location of Tanner’s films, but also their free structure and spirit.
