From Nobel Prize-nominated filmmaker Callum Macrae comes No Fire Zone: The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka, a documentary depicting the final months of the 26-year Sri Lankan civil war. Spanning a period of several months in 2008 and 2009, the film tells the story of the so-called “no-fire zones,” in which 70,000 unsuspecting Tamil civilians were mercilessly massacred, systematically shelled, or executed by the Sri Lankan government, which denies involvement in the crimes.

Among the most shocking story is that of the 12-year-old son of the leader of the Tamil Tigers rebel group: held captive, given a snack, and then executed at point-blank range. Despite the evidence, the government denies his execution, saying the boy was caught in crossfire. We see images of makeshift hospitals, dug-out bunkers, and evidence of the torture, sexual violence, and genocide incurred at the government’s hands, as told by survivors in their own words using video made with mobile phones and small cameras.

With many of those in the Sri Lankan media killed, exiled, or disappeared, it’s time the international community become informed. Macrae has partnered with the Pulitzer Center, Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International, among others, to make the story known to the international community, endangering his own life in the process. Without truth there can be no justice in Sri Lanka. And without justice there can be no peace, says Macrae. We hope our film can be part of that truth-telling.
