Matt Reynolds, an American expat in Slovakia with a successful career in journalism, quits his job at Reuters and returns home with one mission: to search for the perfect chicken wing. A native son of Lyons, New York, Reynolds—with his ever-patient Czech girlfriend and Slovak film crew in tow—assembles an eclectic group of wing aficionados to aid in his search. Score cards at the ready, the group hits the road on a gut-busting tour of the so-called Wing Belt of upstate New York.

Reynolds documents the journey as the group traverses the state, consuming wing after wing, sampling some 284 varieties of the dish and covering nearly 3,000 miles. The team bickers about the qualities of each wing, enters wing-eating contests and cook-offs, sleeps in dingy hotels, and inevitably reaches wing fatigue. Beyond the quest for perfect chicken wing, though, the film is about the camaraderie that transpires when a passionate group of people unite. Members of the ragtag group tell their own stories: a normally shy and retiring woodwright, Thor embodies his brazen alter ego as a competitive eater. Ron, worried about losing his job at Kodak, joins the hunt to stave off a midlife crisis. Al, down on his luck, is a folk artist and self-taught blues musician. Ric, a Hawaiian transplant to Europe, leaves his wife and newborn baby at home in Prague to join the project.

Great Chicken Wing Hunt is part road movie, part anthem to the antihero—in this case, Reynolds—who discovers that the thing he’s been looking for was right under his nose all along.
