Sarah Prefers to Run (Sarah préfère la course) is a story about 20-year old Sarah, a talented track star, who leaves fellow runners in the dust and is offered a scholarship at top-notch McGill University in Montreal. Sarah lives at home with her unsupportive mother, who discourages her pursuit of the sport, saying she needs to rely on something that will “put food on the table” later on. She decides to move to Montreal with Antoine, with whom she works waiting tables. Antoine suggests they marry to take advantage of benefits for married couples.

Sarah has no romantic inclinations toward roommate/spouse Antoine, while he intends to persuade Sarah to fall in love with him. Sarah, though, only has one passion: to run. She shuns any semblance of a normal social life in favor of her pursuit, but soon finds herself drawn to her teammate, Zoey. The love triangle is soon overshadowed by Sarah’s discovery of a heart condition, her pent-up feelings literally making her ill. Her bottled emotions may be the one thing she can’t run from. Writer-director Chloe Robichaud’s debut film screened at Cannes as a selection of Un Certain Regard. Actress Sophie Desmarais (Curling, SDFF 34) as Sarah handles the drama, awkward silences, and dry humor of the film with fluidity—her performance marks her as an actress to watch.
