Russia, 2013, 77 Minute Running Time
Genre/Subjects: Drama, Social Issues
Language: Russian English Sub-Titles

The ironically titled A Long and Happy Life tells the story of a city boy who has disastrously decided to become a farmer but is about to be booted from his land. Young Alexander, a.k.a. Sasha, has relocated to an ailing village in a remote area of Russia and leased a farm. His sense of duty to his farmworkers proves to be his undoing when the local government’s land administration office demands he give up his plot of ground. Initially, he imagines moving back to civilization with his pretty girlfriend, Anya, who has arranged for him to get a healthy chunk of compensation in the deal. But the men who are essentially his serfs beg him to stay. Moved by what seems to be innocent loyalty on their part, Sasha decides to take a stand against local officials, only to discover he’s in this battle all alone, cheated in more ways than one by his former employees. A violent end awaits him, and the miserable Sasha can see it coming. He has meant to do the right thing all along, but ultimately he will pay a steep price for his good intentions.

A short, High Noon-inspired tale of the bleak-chic school of filmmaking, A Long and Happy Life draws power from its handheld style and simple circumstances, like the potato harvest hanging in the balance and the river forever splashing just outside Sasha’s windows. The fifth outing by writer-director Boris Khlebnikov (Help Gone Mad), the film debuted at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival.
