Awarded the Oscar for best foreign-language film for Amour this past spring, after receiving virtually unprecedented consecutive top-prize citations at the Cannes International Film Festival, Michael Haneke is among the most admired and acclaimed directors working today. The Austrian-born filmmaker is also one of the art form’s leading provocateurs, having created such incendiary, difficult-to-watch works as Benny’s Video and the truly notorious Funny Games. Michael H., Profession: Director provides an intimate, behind-the-scenes portrait of this truly singular artist, beginning on the set of Haneke’s recent Academy Award winner and working backward to his memorable 1989 debut, The Seventh Continent. As Michael H. thusly anthologizes the director’s career in reverse, documentarian Yves Montmayeur provides original and rare backstage footage of nearly every Haneke film since 2000’s Code Unknown, captivating clips from his entire body of work, and revealing interviews with the director and his better-known collaborators.

Among those who perceptively share their experiences with and admiration for the director are iconic French actresses Juliette Binoche, Isabelle Huppert, and Emmanuelle Riva, as well as Riva’s legendary Amour co-star Jean-Louis Trintignant (who comically admits to being afraid of the intense auteur). However, it is Haneke himself who offers the most consistently compelling and insightful commentary, presenting the outlines of his Bergmanesque screen philosophy, despite his principled refusal to discuss certain specifics. The must-see Michael H., Profession: Director presents an ideal introduction to Haneke’s cinema, even as it more than satisfies those who are already well acquainted with the master’s emotionally blistering body of work.
