Language: Polish English Sub-Titles

Inspired by real events, The Closed Circuit opens in 2003, in the midst of a lavish factory dedication by a fast-rising, locally owned firm, Navar. The innovative Gdansk outfit, helmed by three ingenious young entrepreneurs, Piotr (Robert Olech), Marek (Przemyslaw Sadowski), and Grzegorz (Jaroslaw Kopaczewski), quickly arouses the suspicions of the city’s shadowy old guard. Spearheading an invasive and increasingly predatory investigation into the source of the company’s sizable resources is district prosecutor Andrezj (Janusz Gajos), a former Communist Party member who continues to exercise considerable power in Poland’s capitalistic present. As revealed in a series of digitally processed flashbacks, Andrezj has a contemptible secret concerning Piotr’s politically persecuted father, a well-respected law-school professor who was the victim of a Communist purge many years earlier.

The steely, deeply disquieting Gajos (Three Colors: White) is especially strong in this consummately performed, melodramatic political thriller. Gajos previously co-starred in the director’s Interrogation, a 1982 film about false imprisonment under the pro-Soviet Polish regime, which would not be screened publicly until after the communist state’s dissolution in the late eighties. (However, with VCRs exploding in popularity late in the communist era, Interrogation would be watched illegally by countless Poles.)

The Closed Circuit, one of the rare Polish films to be financed by entirely private sources—very appropriately for this-pro-free enterprise look at coercive public-sector power—has proved a major domestic box-office hit in its own right.
