In Real Life examines the shifting paradigms of our digital age. In the last 20 years we have become so preoccupied with new technological wonders that we have barely noticed their effect on human contact. Around the globe, people crave old-fashioned interaction, yet many seek immediate gratification through the Internet. Not taking into account possible ramifications, quick fixes lead to anxiety, loneliness, and disconnection.

Putting secret desires out into the cyber world while leading a double life certainly has its consequences. As we become aware that the digital world may not bring us happiness, we must reevaluate what we want from life.

A 43-year-old shoe salesman collapses on an escalator. Morning commuters step over him as if he isn’t even there. He hides his cancer diagnosis from his family. A co-worker marvels that he filmed a sex session on his iPhone and can readily access it anytime to brag to friends; his advice to the disenchanted midlifer is to find a distraction: “It’s the Internet! It’s loaded with pussy!”

A happily married man of 26 years explores his homosexual fantasies with a much younger college boy. His Instant Message cheating and texting blur his perception of fantasy and reality.

A woman meets a wonderful man on the computer. When he is gone, she seeks to replace him in the same way. But trying to fill the void only leads to more emptiness.

Director Jonas Elmer’s cinematic essay collects three years of improvised acting by the cast. Humanity reaches out for flesh and blood, hoping for response. Distractions must not prevent us from living in the moment.
