Based on an original script by director Jos Stelling and Bert Rijkelijkhuizen, this beautifully shot period piece tells the story of Nicolai (Sergey Makovetskiy), an aging physician who returns to a once-magnificent but now abandoned old hotel. It is the place where he first met Elise (Sylvia Hoeks), the great love of his life half a century ago. He hasn’t been back to the hotel since, and, through flashbacks, relives his romantic tragedy.

Needing a place to stay the night, young Nicolai (Leonid Bichevin) eyes the beautiful courtesan Elise. His one-night stay there turns into days—and then weeks. However, Elise belongs to a brutal and heartless old count (Dieter Hallervorden), who buys his titles, as well as his women. Nicolai's love for her seems hopeless, and through the years he returns to the hotel in a futile attempt to take Elise away from the count. While all odds are apparently against the two lovers, not even the count or Elise’s ill health will diminish the passion between them.
