With a punk-rock and Johnny Cash soundtrack, Academy Award-winning director Andrzej Wajda )The Promised Land, Katyn) brings to life Lech Walesa, the charismatic shipyard worker turned Polish politician, union organizer, human rights activist, and Nobel Peace Prize winner.

In the 1970s, Walesa (Robert Wieckiewicz) worked at the Gdansk (then Lenin) Shipyards, becoming a dissident trade-union activist. For this he was persecuted by the Communist authorities, placed under surveillance, fired in 1976, and arrested several times.

The film is structured around an interview that Walesa gives to Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci (Maria Rosaria Omaggio), allowing the film to move between past and present. It also shows the struggle he had in juggling his political ups and downs with his home life of five children and ever-patient wife, Danuta (Agnieszka Grochowska).

In addition to archival footage of the strikes, protests, and martial law, Wajda presents an intimate look at what went on within the couple’s cramped apartment and ever-growing family. His film shows the transformation of a man from father, husband, and worker to someone who helped millions of people find their freedom and solidarity.
