If you think you’re here to watch a movie about World War II, you’re in for a surprise.

A young girl enters a room to find her mother dead from suicide. That girl grows into Janka (Magdalena Boczarska), an introverted cellist, who lives with her photographer father. Janka is furious to learn that her father has taken in Ester (Julia Pogrebinska), a young Jewish woman he’s hidden in the basement, away from the Nazis. After her father is taken into custody by the Gestapo, the two women form a bond. Over time, their relationship becomes increasingly obsessive and intimate.

Ester, who left a lover when the occupation began, starts to rebel against her confinement. But Janka will go to any lengths to keep Ester near her. Things start to crumble as neighbors begin to wonder about the loud noises in Janka’s apartment. And then people begin to “disappear.”

When the war finally ends, Janka doesn’t tell Ester, and continues to keep her confined to the basement. Although free from the Nazis, Ester is still not free from her friendly captor. With shades of William Wyler’s 1965 film The Collector, director Jan Kidawa-Blonski has crafted a nicely stylized and claustrophobic thriller.
