Genre/Subjects: Coming of Age, Drama, Teen
Language: Czech English Sub-Titles

Based on a best-selling novel by 17-year-old Johana Rubinova, My Naked Diary tells Johana’s bittersweet and touching story as she navigates new love and heartbreak, matters of paternity, and the very adult problems of her finely sketched circle of teenage friends.

Divided into a series of “notebooks” introduced by animated titles, My Naked Diary opens in summary mode, with our narrator comically identifying her “run-of-the-mill” Czech family and her friends and classmates who will move into and out of her private melodrama (as she does the same in theirs). Flashbacks will come to identify Johana’s past traumas, whether it is details of her deceased (and long-absent) mother’s journalistic work in the Middle East or Johana’s attempted suicide at age 15 (the results of which director Martin Dolensky presents in somewhat graphic fashion). The frank and emotionally forthright My Naked Diary is serious about its teen protagonists’ problems, whether it is the breakup that sent Johana into a self-destructive spiral or the unwanted pregnancy that a religiously devout friend must face following a first sexual experience.

In both its careful inscription of Johana’s perspective and in the exceedingly adult subjects upon which it touches, not to mention its free-spirited, animation-filled approach to cinematic form, My Naked Diary possesses the bearing of young-adult fiction, a literary genre now experiencing a boom in popularity among both juvenile and adult readers. My Naked Diary will similarly appeal to both audiences.
