Le Week-End

Le Week-End

United Kingdom, 2013, 93 Minute Running Time
Genre/Subjects: Drama, Romance
Language: English

On the occasion of their 30th anniversary, middle-class intellectuals Nick and Meg (icons of screen and stage Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan) revisit Paris, the site of their honeymoon. Nonplussed by their beige-colored hostel, Meg takes control of their lodging, booking a suite with a magnificent view of the Eiffel Tower. Their new accommodations, though well beyond their means, and a series of sterling meals help to pull the couple out of their funk. However, a chance encounter with a very successful old colleague (an exceptional Jeff Goldblum) will force Nick and Meg to face the deep-seated economic and emotional issues that plague their relationship—and endanger their future.

Though Le Week-End is forthright in its searing presentation of the couple’s marital difficulties, director Roger Michell (Notting Hill, Hyde Park on Hudson) and screenwriter Hanif Kureishi (My Beautiful Laundrette,) bring a deft comic touch, resulting in a film that is never maudlin despite its raw subject matter. Indeed, in its witty, urbane dialogue and touristic Parisian setting, Le Week-End plays like a very loose follow-up to Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris. (With its more measured sense of class, there may be a case to be made for the superiority of Michell’s film.)

Of course, it is the director referenced in Michell’s title, Jean-Luc Godard (of 1967’s Weekend), who looms largest over Le Week-End. In fact, it is Godard’s Band of Outsiders that provides the source for Le Week-End’s stirring concluding homage, one of the most moving in recent cinema.
