“In a sense, Gloria is like Rocky,” Chilean director Sebastian Lelio has said of his titular character. No one who has seen this finely wrought, deeply soulful charmer would be surprised by the comparison of a 58-year-old divorcée in Santiago to Philly’s famous underdog.

Just as the Italian Stallion fought less for a mere championship than for the dignity of the little guy, so Gloria is fighting less for mere companionship than for the opportunity to live life to the fullest. As an empty-nester, she navigates the urban singles scene with the sort of aplomb we expect only from the young—but with the wisdom of her years. This is not to say she isn’t lonely or vulnerable; she is, in ways that come to the fore when she takes up with Rodolfo (Sergio Hernandez), likewise divorced with grown children. Well-meaning but hardly her knight in shining armor, he is rather the catalyst for self-discovery, for self-determination in a world that has little room or use for women of a certain age.

Paulina Garcia nabbed the award for best actress at this year’s Berlin Film Festival for her quietly commanding portrayal of Gloria, and the film itself was nominated for a Golden Bear. As well it should have been: Lelio, who co-wrote the script with Gonzalo Maza, has dished up a richly rewarding slice of life here, complete with a soundtrack that only adds to its layers.
