8-Ball  {8-pallo}

Finland, 2013, 108 Minute Running Time
Genre/Subjects: Crime, Drama
Program: Contemporary World Cinema
Language: Finnish English Sub-Titles

Based on Marko Kilpi’s best-selling Nordic crime novel Elävien kirjoihin, the extremely gritty 8-Ball tells the moving story of Pike (Jessica Grabowsky), a young mother imprisoned on drug charges. Following her parole, Pike and her infant daughter Alexandra are set up in a shabby welfare flat next door to an abusive neighbor. As she struggles to get her new life in order, Pike is pressured to return to her old habits by her narcotics-abusing friends. More troubling still is the reemergence of Pike’s former lover Lalli (Eero Aho), a violent drug dealer whom viewers first meet as he is savagely beating a nightclub patron. When Lalli arrives at her door unexpectedly, Pike must decide whether she wants her dangerous ex back in her life—if it is up to her at all.

Parallel to and ultimately intersecting with Pike’s story is a subplot featuring two narcotics cops, Olli (Mikko Leppilampi), the recovering, partially estranged father of a young daughter, and Elias (Pirkka-Pekka Petelius), his older partner with a questionable reputation. As they work their grim beat, director Aku Louhimies’s film introduces us to the unbearable human toll of Lalli’s trade.

A brutally frank depiction of an agonizing subject, the deeply affecting 8-Ball is filled with intense, hard-to-watch passages of violence, on-screen narcotics use, and graphic sex. At the same time, 8-Ball escapes the trap of artless realism, opting instead for a form of expressionism that is made manifest in the film’s perspectival modifications of sound and its oversaturated color palette.
