Lovely Louise

Switzerland, 2013, 91 Minute Running Time
Additional Countries: Germany
Genre/Subjects: Comedy, Drama
Language: German, English

At age 55, Andre lives with his mother, Louise, an octogenarian who was once a would-be Hollywood diva. Their lives revolve around Louise’s routine; repressed Andre feels his mother gave up her future for him. Propelled by guilt, he leads a rather ho-hum life, spending his spare time flying model airplanes, while his mother relives her bygone days.

Louise dictates every detail, from canapés at card nights to slippers by the door, overshadowing any hope of a normal life for Andre. He longs to date Steffi, who hawks sausages at the airfield, but can’t seem to cut the apron strings. When an American named Bill arrives at their doorstep, Louise and Andre’s lives are turned upside down. Charismatic Bill claims to be Louise’s long-lost son, born while she was in Hollywood. Raised by his producer father and a series of nannies, Bill is looking for the family he never had … or is he? Andre doesn’t believe Bill is who he seems, and finds himself jealous of his mother’s unquestioning adoration of this newly arrived usurper. Meanwhile, Andre’s attempts to woo Steffi flop—his dedication to his mother stands in his way.

Bettina Oberli directs this gentle film, which meanders through moments of humor but also touches on some of humankind’s most profound thoughts: How do we define family? What do we owe them? Are any of us who we say we are, or does what we tell people make it so? Andre finally discovers the answers to these questions, and more, when he lets go and pursues his own happiness.
