Martin Lund’s feature film debut, The Almost Man, made the rounds on the international festival circuit this past year after winning the main competition grand prize at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2012.

This comedic, slice-of-life look at 35-year-old Henrik’s resistance to growing up is refreshing as it is honest. Henrik has a new apartment, job, and pregnant girlfriend, Tone, all of which seems too overwhelming to accept as reality. He masks his inability to cope with off-color humor and a detached disposition. Yet at the same time the enduring man-child warrants sympathy and good graces from a nurturing Tone and coddling mother.

Henrik finds solace with his buddies at the gym while awkwardly attempting to find acceptance with his new coworkers. But when Tone hosts a party at their apartment for her colleagues and friends, Henrik is thrown into a social situation, resulting in far too much inebriation and literally running away to the familiarity of his immature friends. Lund’s subtle take quietly surprises with heartwarming appeal.
