Naked Harbour

Finland, 2012, 123 Minute Running Time
Genre/Subjects: Drama, Romance
Language: Finnish English Sub-Titles

Director Aku Louhimies creates a series of parallel stories taking place in a popular Helsinki neighborhood during one week in winter. An episodic film featuring intertwined stories about families and individuals, children and adults, Naked Harbour is, at its base, a film about needing to be loved.

Louhimies has been called controversial because of his dark, hard-hitting depictions of Finnish society in a style that’s more Cassavetes than Dogme. “Aki Kaurismaki’s films are like fairy tales; mine are as realistic as possible” he has said. “I like to call them the illusion of truth.”

With the focus on outsiders and on winter landscapes, the imperfect characters here are driven by the same need to be loved, seen, and touched. After building up a world of tension, the film comes into feelings of forgiveness and new beginnings—but only in the very last minutes.
