Garden-supply store owner Kostas Stasinos is a social and political leftist, and a loving and easygoing father to two teenage children in suburban Athens. But after masked thugs break into his home, tie up his family, and rape his daughter, he begins to lose his grip on reality. When his militaristic neighbor stops by to inform him he caught the whole break-in on camera and can identify the intruders, Kostas decides to take the law into his own hands, abandoning his lifelong ideals, alienating his family, and bringing even more violence into their lives.

Yorgos Tsemberopoulos’s nuanced and calculating moral maze questions not only what he sees as the violence and lawlessness of contemporary life in Athens, but whether a man can return from the disintegration of his own long-held moral beliefs.

A revenge thriller for the 21st century, The Enemy Within dispenses with the notion of muscle-bound thugs tearing rival gangs apart and instead asks us (as well as Kostas’s wife and children) to side with a less black-and-white type of vigilantism.
