Harry Dean Stanton in person to receive the SDFF 36 John Cassavetes Award

This mesmerizing biographical portrait of this year’s John Cassavetes Award recipient combines cinema vérité, clips from his body of work, and enlightening interviews with the actor and some of his closest collaborators.

With a Hollywood career spanning seven decades, Harry Dean Stanton is an anomaly by industry standards. Selecting roles with strong artistic visions and remaining on the fringes, he rarely plays the lead, yet is one of the most recognizable faces in film still working today. This documentary shows an actor nearing the end of his career with the bittersweet tone of a life lived to the beat of his own drum. His honest and refreshing take on acting translates to an overarching philosophy that breeds freedom yet at the same time loneliness.

Beautifully shot by established cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, Sophie Huber’s Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction goes beyond the standard interviews and clips to present a mood of the man, a visceral feeling, which connects the viewer to the actor in an uncanny fashion.
