Amarcord takes place in an imagined, exaggerated sometimes teasing version of the town where Fellini grew up. As is typical for Fellini, the memories of this town are filled with mythically deep snowstorms, strange ships and other inexplicable natural phenomena, both human and not. There are moments of great joy, and also recollections of the brutality of Mussolini and the Fascists. Roger Ebert once said that while the stuff of Amarcord is standard Fellini, he’d never seen it in such a beautiful package.
