The story is about the opening of the Moulin Rouge in Paris, where the Cancan became famous; the film is about social class, life as performance and the total ecstasy of color and dance. It’s a glorious movie, with the great Jean Gabin at the center, and Jean Renoir, perhaps the greatest filmmaker so far, at the helm.
