A colorless clerk in the parks department learns that he has a terminal illness, and suddenly he breaks out of his lethargy and does something both kind and helpful. At his funeral, his co-workers try to figure out why he would have done something so silly and out of character (for all of them) – and they are perhaps changed. Kurosawa’s American reputation rests on his epics, but his social dramas like this one are soulful and brilliant.

DIRECTOR: Akira Kurosawa
