Yet one more masterpiece from Jean Renoir, The River comes from a book by Rumer Godden about her childhood as an English girl in India. The story involves childhood dreams, dashed hopes, renewed hopes, the mundane, the exotic, and a great range of happiness and sadness. This is Jean Renoir’s first film in color, and he makes color both subtle and explosive. The film will be shown in a gorgeous 35mm Technicolor print.
