American Gangsters: The Road to Corleone - A Four Week Film Course

180 Minute Running Time

Classes Run Tuesdays, 7-9:30pm, September 9, 16, 23, 30. Taught by Film Critic Robert Denerstein.

American Gangsters: The Road to Corleone. A look at the screen's most iconic gangsters leading up to and including The Godfather's Michael Corleone. A large field of possibilities will be narrowed to concentrate on the directors, actors and films that have made a lasting impact, work that both reflected its time and helped shape pop-cultural consciousness. So, forget the old adage: For Hollywood, crime always has paid.

In the American Gangster, Denerstein will focus on some of the classic thugs that have helped define one of the most enduring genres in American cinema. Why are these hoodlums so popular? Why do they endure? Why are we so attracted to the outlaw ethos? And what does the big-screen gangster tell us about our culture?

Robert Denerstein worked for 27 years as film critic of the dearly departed Rocky Mountain News. Since leaving the News in the paper's only round of buyouts, Denerstein has been writing and teaching about film and conducting interviews and panels for the Denver Film Society. He is also working on developing a feature-length documentary.
