Winner of the International Critics’ Award (FIPRESCI-Discovery) at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, Claudia Sainte-Luce’s feature debut tells the story of ailing matriarch Martha who, after befriending introvert Claudia in a hospital room, adopts her as a new member of her unruly family. Claudia soon becomes Martha’s caregiver and the oldest sister to four kids from three different fathers, fitting into this rambunctious household as naturally as if she had been born in it. Beautifully shot by veteran cinematographer Agnès Godard, The Amazing Catfish is a charming and heartbreaking look at what makes a family work.
