Italian Showcase

Italy is the longtime home of a diverse and vibrant filmmaking community. The 44th Denver Film Festival
is pleased to present eight new Italian works—six narrative features and two documentaries—from established and emerging directors. Included among them are My Brother Chases Dinosaurs by Stefano Cipani—the 2021 recipient of the Maria & Tommaso Maglione Italian Filmmaker Award. The showcase also features a special tribute to Stanley Tucci featuring his CNN show Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy.

A Chiara

The Guerrasio family and friends gather to celebrate Claudio and Carmela’s oldest daughter’s 18th birthday. It is a happy occasion, and the close-knit family are on top form. However, everything changes the next day when the father disappears. Chiara, unconvinced by the cover story, starts to investigate.

Daniele is a young man who lives on the edges of the Venice Lagoon, he dreams a record breaking “barchino” (motorboat). A vestigial tale of male initiation, violent and destined to fail, it explodes dragging the ghost city along on a psychedelic shipwreck.

Land of the Sons / La terra dei figli

The end of civilization has arrived. It is not known what caused this cataclysm, but the apocalypse has wiped out a large part of humanity and the earth has stopped bearing fruit. A Father and his Son are among the few survivors. When the Father dies, the Son decides to undertake a journey beyond the confines of the sluice and the reservoir, along a mysterious river, moved by the desire to discover the world that was forbidden to him, but above all in search of someone who can read the words written by The Father in a notebook.

My Brother Chases Dinosaurs / Mio fratello rincorre i dinosauri

Jack's brother, Gio, has Down syndrome. As a child, Jack believed the tender lie his parents told that Gio was a special being with superpowers, but now entering high school, Jack no longer believes this. In fact, he is almost ashamed of him, especially since Jack has met the first love of his life. Jack cannot allow himself to make bad impressions with her, and looking after his little brother soon becomes a burden to the point that he pretends not to have a brother.

A music icon that moves “Body and Soul”, Conte has been compared to Tom Waits and Randy Newman by the New York Times. The documentary forms an ideal itinerary with Luca Zingaretti (The Inspector Montalbano mystery series) as narrator, telling the story of an eclectic, mysterious character.

Silent Land / Cicha Ziemia

A perfect couple rents a holiday home on a sunny Italian island. The reality does not live up to their expectations when they find out that the pool in the house is broken. Ignorant of the fact that the island faces water shortage, they ask for someone to fix it. The constant presence of a stranger invades the couple’s idea of safety and starts a chain of events, which makes them act instinctively and irrationally, heading to the darkest place in their relationship.

Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy

Golden Globe winner and Academy Award nominee Stanley Tucci is Italian on both sides and obsessed with the culture and cuisine of his forefathers. Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy - a CNN Series that follows Tucci as he travels the peninsula to discover the secrets and delights of Italy’s regional cuisines. From the luxurious creamy carbonara of Rome, to the delicious simplicity of Sicily’s pasta alla Norma, the food is a gateway through which you can glimpse Italy’s history and culture. In this episode, Stanley feasts on pizza in Naples and toasts the sunset on the Amalfi Coast with a limoncello.

The Tale of King Crab / Re granchio

The rebel Luciano, clouded by his thirst for vengeance against the Prince, starts a fire with tragic consequences. Forced to emigrate to the hostile Tierra del Fuego, the hunt for a long-lost treasure will transform his tragic fate into the Legend of King Crab.

With or Without You / Una relazione
