Giving his most provocative performance in years, Michael Douglas stars as Ben, a skirt-chasing former automobile dealer who’s grappling with midlife self-doubt and financial ruin even as he keeps up his façade of smooth-talking sophistication. When Ben’s current girlfriend (Mary-Louise Parker) asks him to make a trip with her to his alma mater to put in a few words on behalf of her headstrong, college-bound daughter (Imogen Poots), his man-of-the-world act begins to collapse and his real needs are laid bare.

A top-of-the-line supporting cast features Danny DeVito – who also costarred with Douglas in The War of the Roses and The Jewel of the Nile – as the old college buddy who counsels Ben on his troubles; Susan Sarandon as his ex-wife, Nancy, driven over the edge by his philandering; and Jenna Fischer (best known as Pam in the hit TV sitcom The Office) as his daughter, whom he’s likewise in danger of alienating through his self-destructive ways. But it’s Douglas’s performance that’s already generating Oscar buzz, not least because it hearkens back to other cocky businessmen he’s played with such gusto. Solitary Man is codirected by Brian Koppelman and David Levien, the duo who made their debut with Knockaround Guys and collaborated on the screenplays for Rounders, Ocean’s Thirteen, and The Girlfriend Experience, among others; during a Q and A at this year’s Toronto Film Festival, Koppelman observed, “Most people who read the script thought this was the story of Gordon Gecko” – Douglas’s odious wheeler-dealer in Wall Street – “or Michael Douglas [himself]. They were the only two people who could play the part.”
