American Teacher chronicles the lives of four teachers living and working in disparate areas of the country. Incorporating interviews with students, families, and colleagues as well as the teachers themselves as they reach different milestones in their careers, American Teacher tells the larger story of the teaching profession in the United States today.

Our country is facing a remarkable opportunity right now. With almost half of all our teachers eligible for retirement in the next ten years, whom do we want to take their places? Who will enjoy the proud accomplishments and face the frustrating sacrifices of teachers like Jonathan, Jamie, Erik, and Rhena?

American Teacher is based on the New York Times–bestselling book Teachers Have It Easy by journalist and teacher Daniel Moulthrop; Nínive Calegari, cofounder of the 826 National writing programs, and writer Dave Eggers. Coproduced by Eggers and Calegari, it was also produced and directed by Academy Award–winning filmmaker Vanessa Roth and is narrated by Matt Damon.
